WHAT TO WEAR ON A DATE

So you've possibly met the girl of your dreams, you're meeting for the first time and you want to make a good impression, only to realise 30 minutes before you have to leave that you have absolutely no idea what to wear. Sounds like you?

Although men do have it easier than women when it comes to putting outfits together, there will be times guys also mess up and make the wrong impression. This is where I step in and run through what to wear on a date and what not to wear! So lets dive in.

Outfit

Always remember it's not about showing off with the most expensive outfit, in other words it is all about how well it fits your body. Make sure the outfit you choose fits you snugly, not too baggy and not too tight where you'd feel uncomfortable. If it is a chilly night then opt for a tailored or slim fit blazer with slim or skinny fit jeans. Or if it is a hot evening opt for a slim button down shirt short or long sleeve with some jeans and a pair of loafers or Chelsea boots.

Details

So you got the hard part out the way, you've chosen your outfit. Now make sure you iron that shirt, t-shirt, cardigan etc. Women are very observant so you need to know you have everything on point and when she throws you the compliment of looking good, you will feel good and confident about yourself.

Meeting

When choosing your outfit also make sure you consider the location you're meeting. Are you going for a coffee or brunch? Or maybe you are going for an evening dinner that is a bit more elegant? Your lady most certainly will take into account the location you're meeting and the time etc. to plan her outfit, so make sure you go that extra mile too if you want to impress her.

Style DOs and DON'Ts

Every man has their own style and preference however, there are some rules to keep in mind before stepping out the door.

YES:

  • Watch: Regardless of if it is a date or not, you should invest in a watch. Watches are super affordable these days and compliment well with your outfit. Having a watch on will complete your outfit.
  • Colours: Dark colours make your look more sophisticated; you want the focus to be on you and your conversation not the outfit you're wearing. Same goes with your jeans, opt for black or dark navy jeans.
  • Cologne: Smelling good is just as important as dressing right. Remember don't overspray as it will put off your lady. You can check my top five colognes post for detailed information on colognes and how to wear it correctly.
  • Shoes: They say you can tell a lot from a person just from his shoes so don't overlook the importance of clean shoes. Make sure you give them a quick wipe down with a cloth or a quick polish.

NO:

  • Hoodies: Leave the hoodies for the gym or snuggly days at home. You want your lady to know you put in the thought for your outfit; it will make her feel appreciated. If it is a winter night then opt for a cashmere sweater or turtleneck with a trench coat or denim jacket.
  • Ties: Although ties make your outfit if you're opting for a suit, it may make your lady feel uncomfortable and the date might feel too serious. You want to feel at ease so if you're meeting somewhere classy then choose a tailored suit with a plain white shirt.
  • Patterns/Colours: Don't wear patterned tees or bright colours, as you don't want to be attracting the wrong kind of attention. If you're trying to show off your personality then maybe opt for some funky socks or bracelets instead. Stick with the neutral colours and let your humour speak for itself—not through your clothes.
